US A1A from Jacksonville to Key West
If you don't like to start your Florida trip at one of the more popular Florida airports like Miami, Orlando or Fort Myers, then heading out from Jacksonville may be a good alternative.
The very scenic drive from Jacksonville Beach to Miami Beach on US A1A leads past romantic beaches at the Atlantic Ocean.
On certain highway sections you will not encounter any oncoming traffic and you get a taste of freedom and of the wide-open country.
It is worth stopping at one of the beach parking lots to take in the beauty of deserted beaches and the pristine landscape.
St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, Cape Canaveral and Palm Beach, which you will pass along the way, invite you to take sightseeing tours. The beach section south of Cocoa Beach is a mecca for surfers.
Between Palm Bay and Palm Beach you will pass majestic beach villas that almost look like small palaces and provide a stark contrast to the deserted beaches.
When you reach West Palm Beach, the beaches start to get more crowded, with the busiest beaches being the ones around South Beach in Miami Beach.
The highway ends in Key West at mile marker 0, the actual origin of US A1A. From here, you can explore several "southernmost" attractions on foot, for example, the southernmost motel, the southernmost house and, of course, the southernmost point in the continental United States.
